July 4, 2026 – In this episode, we’re joined by a familiar face, an attorney and author of great wisdom and insight. He’s David O. Stewart, here to talk about his latest book, “The Democracy We Must Keep: Seven Founders, Nine Documents, and the Ideas that Framed America.” Two hundred fifty years ago, men of different opinions, visions, and temperaments set out to create a world where people ruled, not kings or dictators.
Nine key documents, analyzed by Mr. Stewart, shaped the nation and restrained the human frailties that the founders were very clear-eyed about. They thought it might not lats 50 years, but here it is at 250 thanks to the tools they gave posterity — us — to create “a more perfect union.”
Check out David O. Stewart’s previous interviews on the History Author Show. These include his non-fiction books “George Washington: The Political Rise of America’s Founding Father,” “Madison’s Gift: Five Partnerships that Built America,” and the epic, “American Emperor: Aaron Burr’s Challenge to Jefferson’s America.” We also discussed The Lincoln Deception, a novel in his Fraser and Cook Historical Mysteries, and “The New Land,” book one of The Overstreet Saga.
